What is a SEA-Guide (S.E.A.G)

SEAG Services has optimized our training courses to accommodate the late-April work call for captains and crew. The apprenticeship program appeals to fledgling crewmembers who need further familiarization with marine systems and boat handling prior to travel with passengers.

After completing a 5-day pre-season training course in April, SEA-Guides meet every other Monday through September to learn new systems on different styles of boats. Then it's time to hop into the SEAG Services shuttle and head to a half-day field experience to observe veteran guides of Juneau in their natural habitat. Icefield excursions, whale watch tours, Museums and more will keep the knowledge flowing and the experience fun.

As new professionals of Juneau's tourism force, SEA-Guides are also tasked with community service projects and data collection for use in real-world science projects. This encapsulates the mission of SEAG Services to incorporate science and contemporary research in our daily work.

In addition to expanding the knowledge-base of our apprentices, SEAG Services is attempting to fill a void in the mariner training requirements for passenger-vessel captains. Unfortunately, federal requirements do not dictate that a boat operator have any prior boating experience prior to carrying passengers for hire. At no fault to the owners or operators, industry norms have restricted the access newly licensed captains have to mentorships. This apprenticeship is an uncharted opportunity for young professionals who want to secure a chair among a growing and lucrative industry
